A year after his racketeering and perlemoen poaching convictions were set aside, Julian Brown has been arrested for alleged assault.
He was arrested on Friday after a video circulated on social media which allegedly showed him hitting and kicking a man.
In the video taken on Thursday, Brown allegedly beats the man until he falls on the floor and continues to kick him.
Before the incident in a parking lot in Hunters Retreat, the two can be seen arguing.
Brown allegedly slaps and punches the man and he falls to the ground.
Cursing in Afrikaans, Brown seemingly threatens to kill the man saying: “Ek sal jou dood skop. Ek skop jou in jou ma se p**s. Ek sal jou dood maak.”
Loosely translated, this means “I’ll kick you until you are dead. I’ll kill you.”
Someone then intervenes and asks Brown to leave the man alone.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said it was alleged that on Thursday a 34-year-old man was assaulted by a 38-year-old man.
“An assault GBH [grievous bodily harm] case was opened and is being investigated by Kabega Park police.
“We can confirm that the 38-year-old suspect has been arrested but cannot be named before his court appearance.”
Brown’s attorney, Danie Gouws, confirmed his client had been arrested but declined to comment as the matter was sub judice.
Brown successfully fought to overturn his conviction and 18-year prison sentence for running what was then described as one of the most lucrative poaching enterprises in SA.
He spent two years in prison after his 2016 arrest.
Brown and his co-accused were acquitted by a full bench of three judges at the Makhanda high court in January 2024 after appealing against his sentence and conviction which was handed down in the Gqeberha high court in 2019.
The judges found the trial court had committed an irregularity sufficient to render the initial trial unfair.
