Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha will undergo a R49m upgrade for the establishment of a high care centre for the treatment of cerebral palsy — one of 11 facilities to provide specialist care in the Eastern Cape.
This was announced by health MEC Ntandokazi Capa during her 2025/2026 budget and policy speech at the Bhisho legislature on Wednesday.
The development is part of a strategy to reduce payouts of medico-legal claims that have cost the department billions of rand.
“This intervention will mitigate the outflow of large sums of money previously paid for future medical care to cerebral palsy litigants.
“We are also strengthening our capacity to provide general and orthopaedic surgeries at identified hub hospitals, closer to where our people live and work and increasing access in our most rural facilities,” Capa said.
The centres will be located in each of the province’s districts.
According to Capa, phase 3 of the upgrades at Dora Nginza will be completed in 15 months.
The contract was awarded in March.
In total, R65m will be used for upgrades at the hospital.
