Two armed robbers stormed a Kwazakhele shop in a late-night heist on Monday, stealing cellphones and alcohol, before joining a gang of about 15 other gun-wielding suspects who then emptied out a nearby ATM.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the incident occurred at about 9.20pm.
“The complainant was at his business premises in Salamtu Street, Kwazakhele, that was already close for business,” she said.
“The complainant was called by a colleague and told to open the door.
“Two suspects entered with firearms wearing masks, they threatened the complainant who opened the door for them to enter.”
Janse van Rensburg said the suspects then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register, as well as six cellphones.
“The suspects continued to the shop area, where there were about 15 more suspects with firearms,” she said.
“The suspects opened [an] ATM and took the cash boxes inside and left on foot.
“The suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, six cellphones and alcohol.”
