A Nelson Mandela Bay police officer who was working in the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) has been accused of rape.
The man was charged in February.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said a rape case was opened at the Ikamvelihle police station.
“The investigation is now with Ipid [Independent Police Investigative Directorate] and we cannot comment any further on this matter. It is between the employer and the employee,” Nobuntu said.
Ipid said it had completed its investigation into the matter, which had been referred to the office of the director of public prosecutions for a decision on whether to prosecute.
“Ipid is still waiting for feedback,” spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said.
This is the second Bay officer in the FCS to come under scrutiny over the past week.
Last week, The Herald reported on a Nelson Mandela Bay police officer who pleaded guilty during an internal hearing to house robbery, possession of stolen goods and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
It was established that the officer would be returning to work on June 2 after a two-month suspension.
According to internal documentation seen by The Herald, the man called in sick from work but allegedly spent the day committing a house robbery.
He was later allegedly caught with the stolen goods and an unlicensed firearm.
