Music has the power to heal, inspire and be a catalyst for change — and this trio of positivity is set to take centre stage on Saturday as a northern areas classical orchestratakes to the stage for its inaugural concert.

The orchestra, which comprises 22 members from as young as 13, intends to captivate audiences as it is led by conductor Sheherazade Mintoor, or Zadie as he is affectionately known.

Mintoor said the orchestra had provided a positive outlet for dozens of northern areas residents who specialised in a variety of instruments including organ, flute, trombone, violin, trumpet and piano.

“We practised for two months nonstop every Friday.

“This is something unique for the northern areas as there has not been a classical orchestra before.”

Mintoor also invited youngsters to join the newly formed ensemble .

“If you can play an instrument you are more than welcome.

“We were fewer than 10 members when we started. It grew to 22 and now we can stage this maiden event.

“I must say the youngsters are very enthusiastic. We would love to grow into a full blown philharmonic orchestra. Something the residents must and will be proud of.

“Our orchestra is open to all — even adults are welcome. There is no age restriction, we are one big happy family but it is open for more growth,” Mintoor said.

At 44, Brendan Alexander is the oldest member of the group and he said despite challenges with transport and other issues, the passion for classical music continually brought them together.

“These kids have a passion for classical music.

“We made a point of transporting everyone to the practises and back home.

“At the moment we have no funding at all. As we all know,  the kids do not always have money, but by the grace of God we are getting there.

“We deny nobody and make a plan to accommodate everybody. These kids have big dreams and we can only be a vessel through which they work,” Alexander said.

TheSpirito Chamber Choir will deliver three items at the concert, while the female duet of Althea Zeeland and Rushnee Philander will also perform.

An organ solo by Shaydon Ruiters will also be presented.

“I would like to make an appeal to the public to come out in their numbers and support the concert on Saturday,” Mintoor said.

“A minimal fee will be charged and the proceeds will go towards buying musical equipment.”

The event starts at 4pm and will be held at the Wesley Methodist Church in Gail Road, Gelvandale.
