Unforgettable day for Nelson Mandela Bay rugby fans

Mexican waves, cold beer and thousands of adoring fans singing in unison at the top of their voices — these were some of the factors which contributed to an emphatic stadium experience during the Springboks’ triumphant Test against Italy on Saturday.

Mexican waves, cold beer and thousands of adoring fans singing in unison at the top of their voices — these were some of the factors which contributed to an emphatic stadium experience during the Springboks’ triumphant Test against Italy on Saturday.

There was hardly an empty seat at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium during the 80 minutes of dominance by the home team, which had not played in front of the Bay crowd since 2018.

Gabi Baatjes, who was lucky enough to have her fan experience sponsored by Dove Men with her mother Fidelia Draai, said watching the boys had been was an experience she would not forget.

“It was something we will both treasure for the rest of our lives,” she said.

“From the action on the field to the roar of the crowd, everything felt momentous.

“Perhaps the most moving moment of the day was when Siya Kolisi walked out with the Rugby World Cup trophy.

“The stadium erupted with pride and admiration, a truly powerful reminder of what he represents to our city and our country.

“It was more than just a rugby match; it was a celebration of resilience, heritage and hope.”

Olilungisa Pupuma, who was afforded the opportunity to watch the Boks for the first time with her 10-year-old brother Umelwe Mselweni, also through the Dove Men experience, described the event as simply incredible.

“I was not expecting to make it here, it’s just incredible,” she said.

“The guys were great and I also had the chance to watch [Makazole] Mapimpi.”

Themba Boltina said more games needed to be staged in Gqeberha.

“It’s always amazing watching the boys play and we enjoyed having them here as everyone could see the crowd was absolutely going crazy,” he said.

“We had a rough start, but once things got going we had the better of them.

'Thanks to Dove for making sure more people could experience this live.”
