A steady stream of voters passed through John Masiza Primary School in Walmer Township, with more than 400 people casting their votes by 11am on Monday.
Presiding officer Lorraine Mokoena said that after the doors opened on time at 7am there had been a steady influx of voters.
Mokoena said operations had been running smoothly with no hiccups, and people behaving themselves.
Two separate queues, catering for voters according to the first letter of their surnames, had helped manage the situation.
The elderly, pregnant and disabled were also given preference.
Thunyalwa Stefaans, 54, said though she was happy to vote, she was not overly excited about it.
“I’m just doing the right thing by voting,” she said.
"[Politicians] aren’t doing anything.
“They just say what they want to, but then nothing happens,” she said.
Another voter, who did not want to give her name, said she was happy to have gone through the process and that it had been quick and easy.
