The vacancies of two Defenders of the People (DOP) councillors in Nelson Mandela Bay has been declared with the Electoral Commission of SA.
Acting city manager Selwyn Thys wrote to IEC regional supervisor Crosby Bacela on Monday night.
“In my capacity as acting city manager it is my duty to inform you of the PR vacancies occurring in the council of Nelson Mandela Bay,” he wrote.
This comes after the Gqeberha City Hall was shut down on Monday after DOP members staged a protest in the foyer demanding that two councillors aligned with the party be removed and replaced.
The party has also asked the court to grant an order to force Thys to declare the vacancies on the DOP seats.
The party wanted to force Thys to declare the vacancies with the IEC for seats held by Tukela Zumani and Florence Hermaans.
Bacela, when contacted, confirmed receiving a letter declaring the two vacancies.
“We will comply with this instruction,” he said.
