Kouga mayor Hattingh Bornman has launched a petition to oppose Eskom’s proposed 2025 electricity hike.

The power utility has proposed a 36% tariff increase in 2025 to the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) after being granted a 12.7% increase this year.

Bornman has since launched the petition and written to Nersa objecting to the proposed tariff hike.

“Kouga municipality is working hard to create an environment that makes business here easy and attractive to investment,” Bornman said.

“A ridiculous increase, as proposed, will most certainly render our efforts fruitless as it will significantly inflate business operating expenses, leading to potential closures and job losses.”

Bornman said the increase would force vulnerable communities to choose between essential needs such as electricity or food.

Residents can sign the petition here.

Alternatively, they can visit the municipal website at www.kouga/gov.za.
