Former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa has resigned as the Ward 8 councillor.

He announced his resignation at a council meeting on Monday.

Tsengwa was removed as mayor in a motion of no-confidence on February 14.

ANC regional spokesperson Moyisi Magalela confirmed Tsengwa’s decision.

“As the ANC, we note the decision and welcome his resignation. We wish him well and thank him for his selflessness and dedication.”

At Monday’s meeting, Tsengwa said he would not join another party or form a new one.

“I have resigned as a councillor but will continue to serve people. I will continue to volunteer my time to assist people.”

PA councillor Beauty Charlie wished him well.

EFF councillor Neil Louw submitted the motion of no confidence to remove Tsengwa as mayor.

“If you want to leave and serve your people, you can do that,” he said.

In March, deputy mayor Alberto Marbi resigned and vacated his seat as a PBI (Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners) councillor.

Deputy mayor and PBI councillor Morton Gericke said Tsengwa’s resignation was expected.

“However, the PBI would like to thank you for your support.”

In April 2023, Western Cape local government, environmental affairs and development MEC Anton Bredell appointed an investigative committee to examine allegations against certain councillors and provide recommendations.

The investigation followed a council resolution in September 2022 to create seven support staff positions in the offices of then-mayor Tsengwa, then-deputy mayor Marbi and speaker Mncedisi Skosana.

• This week, the Knysna council welcomed newly sworn-in councillor Andre van Schalkwyk from the DA, who replaced PR councillor Elmarie Maxim.
