Nelson Mandela Bay DA councillor Nicholas Nyathi has resigned from his position.

Nyathi wrote to DA provincial leaders and speaker Eugene Johnson last Tuesday.

“With profound gratitude and a heart full of hope, I tender my resignation as PR councillor of the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, effective May 27, or as per my notice period.

“Since June 2019, serving in this role has been a transformative privilege, deepening my commitment to our community and shaping my vision for a brighter future.

“As I step down from this position, I remain steadfast in my dedication to public service and my role as a proud member of the DA, working to uphold its vision for a united and prosperous SA.

“This resignation reflects my decision to pursue a new path, one that aligns with my evolving aspirations to serve our nation in innovative and impactful ways.”

This leaves the DA with two vacant seats in the council after Ward 34 councillor Johnny Arends died in April.

Applications for Nyathi’s position close on Tuesday.

He has been on leave since October, when he last physically attended council meetings.

On Monday, Nyathi said he was embarking on a new venture in his life.

“I’m taking a new direction, which I will announce soon. I’m not leaving the DA, I’ve just resigned as a councillor.

“I did my part in Nelson Mandela Bay, and there comes a time for one to spread their wings, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”

He would not divulge his new venture.

Nyathi was one of the candidates interviewed for the National Youth Development Agency board.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the new board members on June 16, which is Youth Day.

DA Nelson Mandela Bay caucus leader Rano Kayser confirmed Nyathi’s resignation.

“I am not sure when the new incumbent will start, but I assume the party will want them as soon as possible, considering we are dealing with a very sensitive matter regarding the [2025/2026] budget.”
