The SA Communist Party regional congress in Nelson Mandela Bay is set to reconvene at the end of June, after failing to conclude its business due to family bereavements.

While the top structure was elected, congress business such as commissions and reading of the declarations was not done at the event held at the weekend.

Before adjourning the elective congress, Bamanye Matiwane was elected district chair, his deputy is Mncedisi Fusa, Lunga Nombexeza was re-elected as district secretary, while Sindi Ibitoye was elected deputy secretary and Rosie Vrolik was elected as the treasurer.

The conference was held on May 30 and will reconvene nearly a month later, on June 28, to conclude congress business.

Nombexeza, a former councillor in the metro, said the members had to attend funerals of close relatives, which had led to the meeting being adjourned.

“On the second day of congress we had to attend the funeral service of [ANC Ward 23] councillor [Nosithembiso] Mayekiso who was part of the our leadership structure, another member lost his sister, while another lost his mother, who was buried on Sunday.”

Nombexeza reiterated that as the newly elected leadership, they were committed to contesting the 2026 local government elections.

He said the plan was to come up with a programme of action to ensure that the SACP was  represented in all sectors of the community.

“We want to mobilise workers and build strong industrial units of the SACP.

“We have a resolution of contesting for state power and for us to do that we need to mobilise all sectors of the community to be part of our programmes,” Nombexeza said.

Their priority now was building structures in all 255 voting districts across the metro.

“We want a branch in every voting district and not just the wards, it won’t be an easy task but it can be done,” Nombexeza said.

Asked whether the two organisations would clash during election campaigns, he said many of their members held positions in branch structures of the ANC.

“There are many of our members including in the elected structure and 15 additional members that hold positions in structures of the ANC.

“We are in an alliance and the ANC understands we are contesting state power as the SACP.

“We will have to discuss how to conduct the elections, checking if our members leading branches of the ANC won’t be purged.”
