The DA launched its mayoral campaign for Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday.
They met in Ward 34, where party members hit the streets to spruce up verges, fix potholes, and visit the Bethelsdorp Old Age Home ahead of a by-election next month.
Retief Odendaal, a MPL and former Bay mayor, is the party's mayoral candidate.
The party is hoping to retain the ward, vacant after the death of Johnny Arends, who died in a car accident on the R75 in April.
The by-election is scheduled for July 16.
DA leader John Steenhuisen launched the campaign in Arcadia.
He addressed about 100 members in an open field.
“Like a sinking ship, Nelson Mandela Bay is sending out a May Day.
“I'm here to tell the residents of the metro we hear the signal and we are coming out to help.
“We brought tools today.
“Weed eaters that will cut down the corruption, rakes that will rake out the opportunities for our people and wheelbarrows to wheel out the corrupt and put them in a rubbish dump where they belong.”
Odendaal, with a spade in hand, said it was time to “dig a grave for the corrupt government.”
“We have proven right here in Nelson Mandela Bay that when we govern, we make progress, we govern for everybody.
“We are not campaigning to lose, we are campaigning to get the [f**ks] out of city hall,” he said.
The party donated five geysers to the Bethelsdorp Old Age home.
