The disturbing incident that saw a Beachview man captured on video mistreating his small dog has, rightfully so, sent shock waves through our community.

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League has launched an investigation into the matter after the nearly two-minute clip of the incident went viral on social media.

The incident took place on Sunday and serves as a reminder that our society must take a strong stance against animal cruelty.

The dog owner, Jacques Fleetwood, said he became upset after the dog first jumped from the vehicle, nearly causing an accident.

His three-year-old dog, Benjamin, had misbehaved, he said.

This prompted his reaction, though he claimed he had meant no harm.

He said the dog first jumped off the bakkie at his house and his child chased after it.

His child was almost struck by another vehicle.

Then, when the dog jumped from the vehicle outside SPAR Seaview, this led to him grabbing the dog by the scruff of the neck and flinging it onto the back of his bakkie.

Meanwhile, a couple preparing to drive out of the car park and their two young children, who were in the back of their bakkie, were among those who witnessed the incident.

But despite Fleetwood’s reasoning, there is really no rationale behind such a cruel deed.

He could have left the dog inside the cab of the bakkie.

He could have left the dog at home.

He could have used a leash.

The possibilities for Fleetwood to avoid such a cruel act are endless.

And let’s not forget the parking lot was practically empty, meaning the chances of another accident were slim.

Such abuse should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

We welcome the launch of the Animal Anti-Cruelty League's investigation, but it must be done speedily.

They have asked the public to stay calm as they deal with the issue, since the social media commentary has been intense.

While this matter is probed, we must start looking at strengthening legal measures to ensure that those who commit acts of animal cruelty face appropriate consequences.

These laws should be clear, comprehensive and enforced.
