She’s done it! Congratulations to deserving Paterson High School principal Rose de Doncker, who has clinched the national Award for Excellence in Secondary Leadership.
Humble, driven and committed to getting the best out of the pupils and teachers, De Doncker has proved to be an outstanding leader, with the Schauderville school a shining example of what can be achieved with the right motivation and positive reinforcement.
The national accolade came just a few weeks after she was named the provincial winner, and an overwhelmed De Doncker said shortly afterwards she was humbled by the recognition of not only her efforts, but also those of the dedicated teachers and pupils.
“Hopefully, this award, in particular, demonstrates the possibility of success despite adversity, proof that excellence can thrive anywhere and that no matter what the circumstances are, there is hope for a better future,” she said.
Under De Doncker’s leadership, Paterson High — which celebrates its centenary in 2025 — has grown in leaps and bounds, participating in Science Expo competitions at provincial, national and international level and in robotics competitions in Indonesia and Greece.
It also won the The Herald Isuzu Quiz in 2022 and 2023, besides other achievements.
“How are these outstanding achievements possible? Rose de Doncker has a vision for Paterson High, and the learners and teachers of this institution of excellence share this vision,” deputy principal Kenneth Prins said.
“She fosters teamwork and collaboration among all staff members, ensuring that the education of pupils is always prioritised.”
Paterson Alumni Centenary Committee chair Carrol Bouah said the committee had worked closely with De Doncker over the years and had come to know “her drive, commitment and work ethic, which epitomises her leadership style”.
For three years, De Doncker declined nominations for the National Teaching Awards for Excellence in Secondary Leadership.
This year, she finally gave in — and now the school is basking in the glow of being home to the national winner.
De Doncker is an inspiration to the many other teachers and principals struggling amid the most challenging circumstances to change the lives of their pupils.
We salute you, Ms De Doncker. May you continue to inspire, motivate and drive others to achieve what they never dreamt they could.
Your light shines brightly in a city crying out for hope.
