And so we have come to that time of year again — a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness, marked by holidays, traditions, and moments of sharing.
In SA, this time is referred to as “ke Dezemba” — a feeling and experience that lasts for the duration of the festive season.
From intimate get-togethers with family or friends, church outings to music festivals and sporting events, many will be out there in search of something to keep them entertained.
But while we enjoy ourselves, it is also important to prioritise safety to ensure that celebrations remain joyful and free from preventable mishaps or tragedies.
And that includes everything from road safety to our personal health.
We all know this is one of the busiest times of the year for travel as families journey to visit loved ones or holiday destinations.
Already this festive season, we have seen an increase in the number of road fatalities compared to the same period in 2023, with more than 500 deaths recorded so far in December.
How do we even begin to remedy this?
By each playing our part as road users and this includes ensuring our vehicles are roadworthy, adhering to road rules and avoiding taking any substances that could impede our driving.
Criminals, fully aware that we generally are less cautious this time of year, take advantage and are on the prowl, including cyber scammers.
The Herald reported earlier that law enforcement and security entities had noted a rise in thefts and burglaries in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Authorities and experts have advised residents to ensure all windows and doors are secure before leaving their homes, for example.
It is also important to remember that while this is a time of joy for some, for others it is a particularly overwhelming and lonely time of year.
Reach out to those who might feel isolated at this time.
Let us all embrace this festive season with care and responsibility, creating a safe and happy environment for everyone to enjoy.
See you in 2025.
