Murder is a tragedy no family should ever have to endure.
Yet in Nelson Mandela Bay — and across SA — we seem to be growing dangerously used to waking up each day to the news of another life violently taken.
But we dare not become numb.
When the victim is a child — just 12 years old — with dreams still unspoken and a future full of promise, we must all stop, mourn and demand justice.
Lithaliyanda Ntoni was reported missing last Tuesday after she left her home in Motherwell to visit a local shop.
She never came back.
What followed were days of desperate searching as her family, the community and police united in a heartbreaking attempt to find her.
Those hopes ended in unimaginable grief when her burnt remains were found in the early hours of Friday morning, discarded in nearby bushes.
No child deserves such a cruel fate.
No family deserves the lifelong anguish of not only losing a child, but of knowing her final moments were probably filled with fear and pain.
Questions linger.
Will we ever know what Lithaliyanda endured? Perhaps.
Will that bring healing or peace? We can only hope.
In an even more devastating turn, police have arrested a family member in connection with her murder.
That someone so close to her may have committed this vile act adds a terrible layer of betrayal to an already unbearable tragedy.
One struggles to comprehend the depth of this family’s pain.
As a community, we cannot look away.
We cannot get used to stories like these.
We say: #JusticeForLithaliyanda — not as a hashtag, but as a solemn call to action.
We owe it to her and to every child in our country to ensure that those who harm the innocent are held fully accountable.
SA must be a place where children are safe — in their homes, in their communities and in their dreams.
Let Lithaliyanda’s name remind us of the work still to be done.
