EP’s Amber Botha named top Jendamark United sportswoman for third time

Held virtually earlier this month, the multi-talented 17 year old took home the award at the virtual awards evening held on September 7. Being a member of the Jendamark United family for a number of years now, Amber admitted her surprise at receiving the accolade, but it was still something that made her very proud. “Honestly, it was not something I had expected. There are some talented ladies in our squad, so any of them would be worthy of the nomination as well,” said the Alexander Road High School pupil.

Eastern Province and Jendamark United Cricket Club player Amber Botha has cemented her place in the club’s history after claiming a third consecutive sportswoman of the season award.

The multitalented 17-year-old took home the award at the virtual awards evening held on September 7.

Having been a member of the Jendamark United family for a number of years now, Amber said the accolade made her very proud.

“Honestly, it was not something I had expected.

“There are some talented ladies in our squad, so any of them would be worthy of the nomination as well,” the Alexander Road High School pupil said.

Having last played competitive cricket for the EP side against Border shortly before all cricket was cancelled by Cricket SA, Botha said it had been a tough period, but it had not dampened her spirits and excitement for the game.

The diminutive right-hand batter felt she had been in great shape physically in the months leading up to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

Despite the abrupt end to the campaign, she was happy with the way she had performed throughout the season.

“I also played provincially for the EP women’s side, so that was great for me.

“To gain experience at that level was great for me and the growth of my game.

“We have great coaches and training facilities, so I think I was in the best shape of my life, but obviously there were still areas I was looking to improve,” she said.

Having made her debut for EP in 2018, Amber, said despite some early jitters, she had taken to the team environment like a duck to water.

“As a youngster coming in, there were a few nerves at first.

However, the team spirit and culture grew on me and I felt at home very quickly.

A grade 11 pupil at Alex, Amber said her aim was to ensure she put in the work needed to try to catch up and make the best of what was left of the school year.
