EP Athletics is excited to have added a family-oriented race to their running calendar with the inclusion of the all-new Vslots 10km and 5km Family Run.
The much-anticipated inaugural event takes place at the Cillie Sports Grounds in Sydenham on Saturday.
EPA sponsorship liaison manager and race director Michael Mbambani said the race was aimed at promoting and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
“Our target is 1,000 plus for Saturday's race; I think at the moment we are close to 500 if not more entries,” Mbambani said.
“We do take late entries on Friday and race day at the venue.
“The 10km will start at 6.30am and the 5km will start at 6.45am.
“All our 10km specialist athletes will be running on the day, even those who ran the NMB will be here doing their recovery run.
“However, our main focus this year is more on the family-run and on masses as we are driving this programme of a healthy lifestyle.
“We know for a fact that competition athletes will arrive because there is money, there is R500 up for the grabs for both male and female finishes.
“So, definitely Andile Motwana, Lithebe Menzeleli, and Sinawo Poti, winner of the NMB 10km Run, will be competing.
“Also in the field is the newly crowned NMB 50km Ultra champion Melikhaya Frans, who will be doing his recovery run.
“However, we are expecting one or two guys from other regions maybe from East London to come and compete.”
Mbambani applauded Vslots for sponsoring the event.
“In this day and time, it's always difficult to secure sponsors but for this one, we would really like to thank Vslots for coming in and sponsoring a new race.
“Normally people would want to come in and sponsor an existing event, but in this case, it is an all-new one.”
