Tennis enthusiasts can expect exceptional tennis at this weekend's Nelson Mandela Metro and surrounds leg of Amex National Club Championships in Gqeberha on Sunday.

Tennis SA and American Express are running the event nationwide, and the A and B sections taking part are known as the Topguns and Popguns.

Tennis NMB are hosting the local district leg on Sunday at Wembley (Topguns) and Westview (Popguns). There are six and eight teams taking part in the A and B sections, respectively.

Play will start at 8.30am and will continue until about 4.30pm.

NMB district event organiser Mike Bladen  said spectators can expect some top-class and exciting action.

While the tennis at Wembley will be of a high standard, most clubs at Westview have entered the event to have some fun and see old friends.

“We have done Topguns before under a different sponsor five years ago. American Express is the new sponsor now, so this is the first event under the Amex banner,” Bladen said.

“This is a club event, there must be two men and two ladies from one club, and that makes a team. As much as clubs are involved, is more like a team event.

“The clubs taking part are clubs from Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, but we have included the Sarah Baartman clubs as well.

“We have six teams taking part in the A section, and in the B section, there are eight teams.

“People can expect some magnificent tennis at Wembley, probably the top club members in the province are going to be taking part.

“We have some good tennis players in the province, they are top club players in the province.

“The event will be like a T20 tournament of tennis.”

The A section comprises two teams from Cradock and one each from Kenton, VP Oval, Wembley, and Westview.

The B section comprises three teams from Westview, two from Rhodes, and one each from Cradock, Walmer, and Wembley.

The top two teams from each section then progress to the Eastern Cape leg in Makanda on May 30.

The finals, comprising the winners of all the provincial A sections, will be held in Sun City later in 2025.
