In honour of the Gqeberha-born Proteas bowler Lutho Sipamla, the Zwide-based United Brothers Cricket Club is hosting an inaugural cricket competition in his name.
The Lutho Sipamla Legacy Cup will be played over a period of two days.
The competition will kick off with T20 action on Saturday and finish with a 50-over clash on Sunday.
All matches will take place at the Madibaz fields and the first matches will kick off at 10am on both days.
United Brothers club secretary Vusi Gonya encouraged all avid cricket lovers to come and watch some exciting cricket.
The competition will see six clubs competing for the bragging rights of being crowned the inaugural winners of this prestigious event.
“This will be the inaugural event, and it will involve six teams,” Gonya said.
“The competing teams are hosts United Brothers, and Nelson Mandela University, which will have two teams competing, as well as Soweto Pioneers from Gauteng, our visitors, Fort Hare University from Alice, and EP Academy from Eastern Province Cricket.
“The purpose of the event is to celebrate one of our own, Lutho Sipamla, who grew up in our Zwide hub.
“He then went to play for United Brothers and after that, he was selected for the SA under-19 squad.
“In 2016, he went to the World Cup, and he made his professional debut after coming back in 2017 for the Warriors, our franchise team from Gqeberha.
“After that, he was selected for the Proteas in 2019. He has played for all formats for the Proteas — Test, T20, and ODI.
“So, he is a fully capped Protea.
“We wanted to celebrate him more and his mother's company, Phytomed, is the main sponsor together with United Brothers Cricket Club.
“So, it's more like giving back to the family that has done so much for the club throughout these years.
“The tournament will start on Saturday, at Madibaz field at NMU. We will start with the T20 games, which will kick off at 10am, and with the final taking place at 2pm.
“The winners of the T20 competition will receive a trophy.
“On Sunday, the competition will change to 50 overs; it will be a rivalry fixture between United Brothers and Soweto Pioneers, and Madibaz against Fort Hare.”
Sipamla plays for the DP World Lions.
Gonya said everyone is welcome to come and watch the matches. No entry fee is required.
