After slumping to two unexpected Grand Challenge defeats, Gardens face a daunting trip to face Groot Brakrivier at their intimidating “House of Pain” venue in the Pick n Pay Gold Cup on Saturday.
The moment of truth has arrived for Gardens and Kruisfontein United as they carry the EP flag at SA's premier national club rugby tournament.
Defending Grand Challenge champions Kruisfontein have a home fixture against Heidelberg at the Sports Complex in Humansdorp.
The sudden-death Gold Cup knockout format means will be no second bite of the cherry for clubs coming up short in the opening round.
The 32 teams are divided geographically into North and South sections of 16 sides each, with the last team standing from each section contesting the grand final in October.
The lure of watching two SA's best club teams in action is sure to draw a capacity crowd the Sports Complex in Humansdorp.
If Gardens beat Groot Brakrivier they are likely to be rewarded with a mouth-watering home second round tie at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Kariega.
Gardens vice-president Royden Johnson said: “When Gardens run onto the field in the Gold Cup, we do so carrying not only our badge, but the heartbeat of the Eastern Cape.
“We play for our community, for every supporter who fills the stands, for the families who sacrifice, and for the players and legends who came before us and paved the way.
“This moment is not just Gardens’ moment — it is our moment.
“A moment for the Eastern Cape to stand proud, united, and strong.”
In their final Grand Challenge Top 12 matches on Saturday ahead of the Gold Cup Kruisfontein beat United Barbarians and Gardens lost to Star of Hope.
Gardens are gunning for what would be a remarkable treble of Grand Challenge, Ebrahim Patel Community Cup and Gold Cup titles.
The Kariega side struck a mighty blow for EP when they defied the odds to win the 2025 Patel tournament by toppling crack Boland outfit Robertson Town.
Gardens carried their form at the Patel tournament into the Grand Challenge and were unbeaten for 16 matches ahead of their recent losses.
Kruisfontein, on the other hand, made a slow start to their Grand Challenge title defence.
They have, however, been gaining momentum and are back in the frame to earn a semifinal berth.
Kruisfointein have an opportunity to redeem themselves after a poor showing at the Saldanha Super 8 Easter tournament when they lost all three matches they played at the start of the season.
Kruisfontein vice-president Calvin Zietsman said excitement was building in Humansdorp ahead of the Gold Cup showdown.
“As a former player and now an executive, this is a dream I never thought I’d see so soon,” he said.
“To walk into the Sports Complex on Saturday and know we’re not just talking about it any more — we’re living it — it gives me goosebumps.
“It’s not just a game, it’s history in the making.
“The build-up has been electric. Players are locked in, management is giving everything, and supporters are buzzing like never before.
“Last year, when we stunned everyone by winning the Grand Challenge and people finally took notice of our little town and Kruisfontein United Rugby Club.
