Chippa United’s 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 on Saturday will stand the team in good stead for a testing stretch of fixtures, head coach Thabo September said.

The Gqeberha side advanced to the next round of the competition thanks to a strike from Sinoxolo Kwayiba and an own goal from Brandon Theron, who also scored for Arrows at the other end on the day.

September, who won the Nedbank Cup during his playing days as a player at SuperSport United, said lifting the trophy as a coach would be a huge personal achievement.

Last season Chippa booked their spot in the semis after beating TS Galaxy 2-0 in the quarterfinals, but later lost 3-1 to Orlando Pirates in the semifinals.

The last time the Chilli Boys reached the final of the cup competition was in 2021, but they lost 1-0 to Tshakhuma (TTM).

“The win against Arrows does not only bring confidence in me, but to the players as well.

“It’s also psychologically good for me that I can do this thing,” September said.

“I did it with the DDC side and now, being in the top league, I am trying to instil my coaching style. So when you win, you start believing in what you are doing.

“It was very important that we win moving on to the league because we are going into three tough games, so that was important.

“When you play in a competition like this you want to win it; that’s a nice wish or plan. But I think it’s the next game and the next game; as a player it was like that as well.

“It would be nice if I’d win it as a coach as well.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s game, September said: “I think it was a good game, both teams wanted to play to win and there was no team that was sitting back.

“It was a good display of football; a passing game.

“We know Golden Arrows is a good team in terms of the passing game.

“We tried to do better than them on that front, and I felt that it was a good game for supporters to watch and I was happy for the results.

“It’s always a motivation; there is something to play for.

“The players were motivated on their own.

“I think Mabhuti tried to work their psyche, but these are professional players at the end of the day.”

“They have to work and work. And work for them is to win games.”
