Knysna has come out on top in the tug-of-war for the title of “Best Dorpie” in the 2022 Kfm Best of the Cape Awards.

The town trumped destinations including George, Langebaan, Robertson and Montagu to win the title.

The scenic seaside town was nominated about a month ago and received the most public votes to claim the coveted category.

Other categories including best guest houses and best gin in the Western Cape were just some of the accolades on offer.

The picturesque seaside town is no stranger to high praise, having been listed as the 19th Most Loved Destination Around the World on the 2021 Tourism Sentiment Index.

Ecstatic Knysna mayor Laveal Davis said thousands of listeners had made their voices heard for the popular radio station’s competition.

“Knysna is clearly everyone’s favourite dorpie,” Davis said.

“It is clear that it’s not just our residents who say that the greater Knysna area is amazing, everyone else does too.

“Every person who lives in the greater Knysna area, or who has visited us, knows that our area deserves this accolade.

“With our incredible natural beauty, rich history, fantastic tourism offerings and friendly people, we have won the hearts of South Africans and international travellers.

“Knysna offers something for everyone, and everyone loves Knysna.”

Davis thanked everyone who had voted, saying the love was appreciated.

He thanked local residents for welcoming guests to the town, saying together they could rebuild the region’s biggest economic contributor.

“Congratulations to the residents of the greater Knysna area. You are who make Knysna great.

“Together we can build on this recognition to boost tourism in our area and build an even better, more beautiful, inclusive, innovative and inspired Knysna.”
