Starting from a computer shop at Summerstrand Village, Nelson Mandela Bay’s Amobia Communications now provides internet solutions to thousands of homes and businesses around the country.
Two decades on, the fundamental ethos of the customer comes first as its bedrock as the company aims to stay ahead in the competitive information technology sector.
Company MD Nicola Smith said they were humbled and grateful to celebrate the special 20-year milestone which became official on Friday.
While looking forward, she said they would remain grounded in their core values.
“It comes down to service,” Smith said.
“We treat all of our clients with respect and we take every complaint seriously.”
“The company aims to maintain its service levels and continue to deliver services to the public.
“As new technology is rolled out, we aim to remain current in a very challenging market,” she said.
Growth has been gradual, starting with the computer shop and then evolving into an internet cafe with offices spread across the metro to now a connectivity provider.
Today Amobia Communications has a bouquet of home and business connectivity products from fibre and wireless. It also offers its voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on a fibre line.
VoIP is a technology that allows voice calls to be done over an internet connection.
Based in Newton Park, Amobia Communications, also has a satellite office in Cape Town and a dedicated 24-hour helpline for its clients.
“We always believe there should not be a time that our clients should not be able to reach us.”
“Our technicians will help someone on the phone for other parts around the country but here in Gqeberha and Cape Town we dispatch them to homes,” Smith said.
According to the MD, most of the company’s client base is in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
Smith said new media platforms had been critical to getting new clients.
“The local market relies heavily on relationships while the national market is reached via social media channels.”
Being in an evolving industry, as new technology constantly disturbs the core function, Smith said while change presented new opportunities it also brought challenges for the clients.
“We have to assist clients with ever-changing technology which is very challenging for the consumer to keep up with and always know our lingo,” she said.
“As new technology is rolled out, we need to remain current in a very competitive market.”
Every year, Amobia Communication recruits interns to upskill them in internet connectivity.
